State Board Schools Found Teaching CBSE Syllabus
The state government has ordered the District Education Offices (DEOs) of major cities of Gujarat, namely, Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara and others, to crack down on state board-affiliated schools found teaching the CBSE syllabus. The DE Os have been asked to carry out surprise raids and submit a report soon.
The order follows a major ruckus in Rajkot where a police complaint was filed against the management and trustees of four state board-affiliated schools on Thursday. Despite being affiliated to Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB), these schools were reportedly teaching the syllabus of NCERT.
If sources are to be believed, there are several schools in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot which teach the CBSE syllabus, despite being affiliated to the state education board.
This is because there is no cap on the fees that the institutes can levy to get CBSE affiliation. Moreover, most competitive exams such as JEE and NEET are also conducted according to the CBSE syllabus and, therefore, schools tend to teach the NCERT syllabus.
AJ Shah, chairman, GSHSEB, said this is not acceptable. “One condition for getting affiliation to the state education board is to teach the state board’s syllabus,“ Shah said.
Sources said the Gujarat board will conduct random checks at schools which reportedly teach the CBSE syllabus despite affiliation to the state board, and initiate strict action against those found guilty.
